Die Rebsorte Aglianico

The origins of this vine go back to the Greeks, the word itself, Aglianico, comes from a variant of the Greek word “hellenikon” or “Greek” and later underwent further changes from hellenico – hellanico – hallanico and finally aglianico.

This variety thrives on hilly, volcanic soils. It’s rich in polyphenols and requires careful clonal selection. A noble and austere vine that tends to be harsh but is able to produce wines possessing great organoleptic qualities capable of attracting connoisseurs’ attention. Full-bodied and suitable for long periods of aging are the qualities that contribute to its complex and harmonious character in the glass. It is no coincidence that it’s known as “The Barolo of the South” as the variety has the same bold tannins, enormous potential for aging and complexity as Nebbiolo.
